Weekend Roundup

April 12th, 2016

It’s been a busy few days for the Troopers of Old Line Garrison!

On Thursday, 4/7, Randy (BH 21029) and Doug (TK 6165) were accompanied by Ski from the Mando Mercs and William from the Galactic Academy to the Lisbon Elementary School Reading Night. The troops all took up spots in the gym while the children took pics and then went to work on their projects.  The event had a Star Wars theme with positive self esteem and other social/emotional topics. The students started as younglings who leveled up to padawans, apprentices, and eventually Jedi Masters by rotating through different areas.  At the end, all the kids who dressed up were invited to join in a final group picture before everyone headed out.

On Friday 4/8, troopers traveled to the Centennial Lane Elementary School Science Faire, where the sponsors were kind enough to provide food and drink.  Troopers spent most of the time wandering around the science fair, seeing everything from the traditional volcano to a presentation on dark matter! Many teams liked taking pictures with us beside their booths, especially the one called “Straw Wars.” A big thank you goes out to Randy’s wife for helping us out. After the event, the crew all headed out for some great Mexican food!

Saturday saw us teaming up with Garrison Carida, Terrapin Base, the Mandos, R2, and the Galactic Academy to storm the 3rd annual Cecil Con in Elkton, MD.  Between the groups, there were about 20 members for the one-day event.  Troopers manned publicity tables, took photos, and just generally had a blast with the guests.  There was even an improptu Uptown Empire Funk dance party.  The event organizers were extremely grateful for our presence and believe they nearly doubled their attendance from last year.

Sunday, Warren (ID 74075), Devin (TB 62690), Warren’s daughter Delaney (GA, ID), and Jordan (squire) joined a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Poe from the Ravens, and a half dozen college mascots for the Ronald McDonald House Red Shoe Shuffle 5k.  This run/walk event took place in downtown Baltimore, and the troops spent the morning interacting with spectators, cheering for runners, and bringing smiles to kids of all ages.
