Event Round Up, 5/4 – 5/7

May 12th, 2016

May the 4th

Walkersville Public Library

This was a nice library event. The library was pretty small, but they were REALLY glad to have us there. Dave from RL and Matt trooped for a little over an hour while the kids played games and worked on Star Wars crafts.

Georgetown University Medical Center

Jason, R2, and Justin (Garrison Tyranus) arrived prior to do the room-to-room visits for the kids. The rest of the crew arrived around 4:30 to get suited up and walked to the room where they were showing The Force Awakens. Thanks to the “Hope for Henry” foundation, the hospital set up lots of cool balloons, ordered pizzas, and movie-viewing treats for the kids. We interacted with the kids as they came into the “theater”, took pictures, and danced. It was quick troop, but we were well received and the families really seemed to enjoyed us being there. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a lovely relationship.

Star Wars or Spy Wars at the International Spy Museum

The event ran very smoothly. A few members arrived early and suited up to roam the museum and take pictures. Most members arrived and were suited up by 6. We were mainly in the lobby of the Spy Museum taking photos with guests as they went upstairs to the event space. We even took pictures with Peter Earnest, Executive Director of the museum and former member of the CIA. At 6:30, we moved upstairs to the event and found seats in the back of the room. Dr. Vince Houghton, curator of the museum gave an hour and a half long presentation on spying in the Star Wars movies and specific examples of various aspects of espionage and accompanying movie clips. Following the presentation there was a Q&A session. Photo ops took place following the event, and we were joined by a few members coming from the GW Hospital troop. The Spy Museum was very thankful for our presence, and I made sure to let them know we’d be happy to return for any future events they have.  Special congratulations to Josh O for his first troop!

P.S.–The troops went to Gordon Biersch for dinner afterwards, and R2-D2 completely disrupted the restaurant as all the servers, busboys, and hosts were taking photos of him. Can’t take Artoo anywhere…

Sparrows Point High School Spring Concert, May 5th

This was a really fun event. The event host and the High School band treated really well and were excited about our presence. During the concert, when they played John Williams music and when music from SW was played, we entered. A lightsaber battle commenced between Darth Vader (played by a student) and a Jedi (Mat H from the RL). The school mascot then entered and helped defeat Vader.

Tiana’s 5th Birthday

We arrived a little before 4 and got suited up in the baby’s room. We walked outside to greet the kids who were being taught some lightsaber techniques. They took turns “attacking” us (no hitting). Then we took photos with all the party goers. It was a fairly quick troop and we unsuited while eating pizza, which is always a plus.

Free Comic Book Day

Cockeysville Library

This turned out to be a solo troop. The library staff was very excited and thankful that Bry was able to attend. The usual pictures were taken and lots of smiles to be seen all around. The troop lasted an hour, and the library staff acted as squires.

Beyond Comics, Frederick

As always, it was fun trooping at Beyond Comics. We started in the store and then moved outside when it got warm. We weren’t sure about the weather at first, but the sun finally came out. They had a line out the door for the first two hours. We had a steady stream of folks wanting pictures. Thanks to Brian for helping out! It was his first time squiring. We were also out with Fred from the East Coast Avengers, Dave & Tom from RL, Pat from R2DC, and Corrie, Josh & Jason from MMCC. Finally, I don’t think we caused any traffic accidents while standing outside this year! :)

Third Eye Comics, Annapolis

Third Eye Comic always treats us well. We all arrived between 8:30 and 10:00, including members of the Rebel Legion and Mandolorian Mercs. Once people were suited up and ready to go, we headed outside to provide those waiting in line some entertainment. We walked up and down the line posing for pictures. We had an Annapolis Police Officer pull up and pose for some pictures with us. This year Third Eye had a great process down and was getting the people in and out so the line died down really quickly. Towards the end, we had a little kid named Tyson dressed up as a Stormtrooper that just loved seeing us there and his parents were so happy to get pictures with us. Around 12 we all desuited and the majority of us headed over to Mission BBQ to relax and have some good food.  A big thanks goes out to Andy and Kat for being our Squires. Andy took great pictures for us.
