Finished! OLGa Forum Upgrade Sunday 6/25/2017 11:00am

Postby crashmann » Thu Jun 22, 2017 3:42 pm

It's going down!

Bry and I have been working with the Legion Web Master Cari Merola in preparation for upgrading our PHP forum to enable cool new features, and to fix a bunch of busted stuff.

Starting Sunday morning at 11:00am, the forums will be down for maintenance, and will return to normal operation by 5:00pm (hopefully much sooner than that!)

Fortunately we only have the "Meet the 501st" at Fantom Comics in Washington DC on Sunday at 2:00, and the rest of the week is wide open. So event coordination should not be impacted.

Be sure to use the Facebook group if you have an itching desire for Imperial Communication.

Will a Tapatalk compatibility upgrade be included?

Not yet...

I'm still on the fence about Tapatalk. Some folks have expressed concerns about security issues with Tapatalk, and since my name is on the Domain Registry, I would be on the hook if oldlinegarrison.com was used to launch bad things into the Internet.

A brief Googling of Tapatalk Security Vulnerability brings back a nightmare of issues, so we'll probably not be implementing it on our board.

The Old Line Garrison forum upgrade has been rolled back.

Our server is running an ancient version of PHP 5.2.17 on the backend that the hosting provider will need to upgrade. This may potentially break things for the forum.

Once the backend has been upgraded, then we can upgrade the actual forum software from 3.0.12 to 3.1.10

Stay tuned for another scheduled maintenance window in the future.

And our upgrade to PHP 5.6.30 and phpBB 3.1.10 is complete!

Yes, the forum doesn't look as pretty as it used to, so there's some customization that needs to be done. The most important thing is we did not lose any of our forum accounts or messages!

You may need to re-upload your avatars or signature banners.

If you find other issues while using the forum, please post them here.

User self registration has been opened with challenge questions, so we'll see how that goes. If spambot accounts start coming through, we'll look at picture challenge questions.

We are going to run with the forum in this state for about a month, then look at adding more features, such as the "going, not going, maybe" button at the top of the Event postings.

If there are features you've found useful on other forums, please post a description and a link here. Then we'll look at integrating them into our forum.

A little customization and a few hours later, the forum is looking pretty good, even on mobile!

After lots of digging and checking with some other folks, there is no easy plug in for the "Going, Not going, Maybe" option for the event postings. The Rebel Legion has some super custom code to make it work on their forums, but their next upgrade requires professional php programmers (real dollars). I'd rather keep our php board lean and free.

The password recovery works - but Gmail sends the message straight to the Spam filter, so check there if you don't get the reset link.

You are able to change your username under your Profile | Account Settings

But most importantly, all of our smilies are still working! :cheers1 :eatdrink:

Also might want to take a second look at the colors used for things such as "visiting garrison members and Cadets" they seem to get washed out now.

I also noticed the colors for the Visiting 501st Members and Cadets weren't working out with our new angry red and black theme.

I've gone and tweaked the colors so they should be more distinct and visible. I'm also open to suggestions, so if there's a different color that you'd prefer, let me know and I'll test it out.

So many knobs to tweak!
